Where do ChatSEO's numbers come from?

Search Console, DataForSEO, Ahrefs: the source of every number ChatSEO shows, and why it can differ from another tool.

ChatSEO does not make up its numbers: it reads them from Google or from SEO data providers. Here is where each one comes from.

Your clicks, impressions and positions: your Search Console

Your site's clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average positions come from your own Google Search Console, the one you connected to ChatSEO. By default, ChatSEO looks at the last 28 days.

Without a connected Search Console, ChatSEO does not have these numbers: it works from your site's public Google rankings instead.

Your traffic: Google Analytics

If you connected Google Analytics 4 (Pro plans and up), traffic and behaviour data come from your GA4 property.

Search volumes, public rankings, competitors, backlinks: DataForSEO

Keyword search volumes, the Google results (SERP) for a query, competitor site data and backlinks come from DataForSEO, an SEO data provider.

Domain authority: Ahrefs

The authority score out of 100, shown for your site and your competitors, is Ahrefs' Domain Rating. It is refreshed regularly, not in real time.

Why a number can differ from another tool

  • Search volumes are estimates. Each provider has its own database and method: Semrush, Ahrefs or Google Keyword Planner do not give the same volumes, and none of them is "the real one".
  • The period is not the same. ChatSEO looks at the last 28 days in Search Console by default. Always compare over the same period.
  • Average position is not a live position. Search Console gives an average over every search in the period. A position read from Google results is a snapshot at one moment, for a given country and language.
  • Country and language matter. The same query does not have the same volume or the same results in the US and in the UK.
  • Authority scores do not compare across tools. Ahrefs' Domain Rating is not Moz's Domain Authority or Semrush's Authority Score.

A number looks wrong?

First compare with your own Search Console, over the same period. If the gap remains, message us in the chat with a screenshot of the number in ChatSEO and a screenshot of your Search Console.
