Free Ahrefs Alternative: 7 Best Tools to Use in 2026

🔬 How We Compared These Free Ahrefs Alternatives

For this guide, I pulled each vendor's official, up-to-date pricing page (June 2026), tested every free tier on a real verified site, and weighed each tool on the four jobs that actually matter when you leave Ahrefs: your own backlinks, keyword research, rank tracking and a basic technical audit. Where a tool restructured its plans (SE Ranking and Ubersuggest both raised entry prices since 2025), I used the current public numbers rather than the old quotes still floating around the web.

My honest one-line take: no single free tool replaces Ahrefs, but a small stack does. From experience, the combination that covers most freelance and SMB work is AWT (real backlinks) + Google Search Console (real rankings) + an AI layer to tell you what to fix. That last piece is where I land on ChatSEO, and I rank it as the best AI-first pick rather than the best tool overall, because the genuinely best free source of Ahrefs-grade backlink data is Ahrefs's own free product.

Who should NOT bother with the free route: if you run enterprise link-building or audit hundreds of competitor domains weekly, the free stack will frustrate you, just pay for Ahrefs. Everyone else can save real money.

🤔 Why Look for an Ahrefs Alternative?

Let's be honest about why you're here. The three main frustrations with Ahrefs are always the same:

1. Price: Ahrefs Lite at $129/month, Standard at $249, Advanced at $449, Enterprise from $1,490/month. For a freelancer or bootstrapped founder, that's a serious chunk of MRR.
2. Overkill for most users: Ahrefs's depth (35 trillion backlinks, billions of keywords) is incredible if you're doing enterprise SEO. For a 50-page business site, you're paying for 95% of features you'll never touch.
3. No AI layer: Ahrefs gives you massive data but no conversational assistant to explain what to do with it. You still need to know SEO to use it effectively.

A great free Ahrefs alternative should cover the core 20% you actually use: your own backlinks, keyword research, rank tracking, and a basic audit. Ideally with an AI layer that tells you what to prioritize.

🏆 The 7 Best Free Ahrefs Alternatives (Ranked)

1. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (AWT): Ahrefs's Own Free Tool

Most people don't know this: Ahrefs offers a genuinely free tier for site owners, and it's the single best free Ahrefs alternative for backlinks. AWT (Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, now also branded "Ahrefs Free") gives you:

• Your site's backlinks straight from the full Ahrefs index (up to 1,000 shown at once)
• Site Audit scanning 170+ technical issues, with 5,000 crawl credits per project per month
• Top organic keywords you rank for, plus your site's Domain Rating (DR)

You can't research competitors at scale, but for your own site, this is the same index data as paid Ahrefs. Verify via DNS or Google Search Console (instant if GSC is already connected) and it's free forever. See Ahrefs Webmaster Tools →

2. Google Search Console: The 100% Free Foundation

For your own site, Google Search Console is more accurate than Ahrefs for rankings, impressions and clicks, because it's Google's real data, not a third-party estimate. It's the non-negotiable base layer. Combined with AWT (backlinks) and an AI layer on top, you've replaced the daily 80% of paid Ahrefs for free.

3. ChatSEO: Best AI-First Pick (Free Trial, then from €29/month)

ChatSEO doesn't replace Ahrefs's backlink index, it's the tool that turns your AWT and GSC data (above) into an action plan. Instead of clicking through 15 dashboards to piece together what to do, you ask what to fix and get a prioritized answer grounded in your real Search Console queries. Its free trial plus the €29/month Starter plan (€23/month annual) make it the most accessible way to add an AI layer on top of the free tools.

Where Ahrefs still wins: deep competitor backlink analysis (the 35 trillion link index) and large-scale content exploration. If you're not doing those daily, you're overpaying for Ahrefs. See how an AI SEO agent replaces traditional tools →

4. Mangools (KWFinder): Cheapest Easy-to-Use Paid Alternative

At $29/month (and under $20/month on annual billing), Mangools is the most beginner-friendly paid replacement: KWFinder for keywords, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher for rank tracking, and SiteProfiler for a backlink snapshot. The data isn't Ahrefs-deep, but for a solo blogger or small site it's more than enough. Full Ahrefs vs KWFinder comparison →

5. Ubersuggest: Cheapest All-in-One With a Lifetime Option

Ubersuggest now starts at $29/month for its Individual plan (the old $12 tier is gone), but it stays interesting thanks to a one-time $290 lifetime deal that pays for itself in about 10 months. You get keyword research, rank tracking, a basic site audit and backlink lookup. The data depth isn't Ahrefs-level, but the lifetime option is genuinely unusual in this space. 6. Moz Link Explorer: Best Free Tool for Competitor Backlinks

Moz Link Explorer is the best free way to peek at competitor backlinks without an Ahrefs subscription. You get 10 free queries per month, enough for small-scale link research, and DA (Domain Authority) is still the industry's most-cited link metric. Moz Pro now starts at $49/month if you outgrow the free tier. Moz DA vs Ahrefs DR explained →

7. Majestic: The Historical Backlink Specialist

Majestic is the original backlink specialist, and its index goes back further in history than Ahrefs's. Trust Flow (TF) and Citation Flow (CF) are the most respected link-quality metrics after Ahrefs DR. No keyword research, no rank tracking: this is pure backlink focus at $49.99/month. Honorable mention: Serpstat ($69/month, free tier 5 queries/day) is the closest single-tool Ahrefs clone (keywords, backlinks, rank tracking and audit in one), and Serpstat stays cheaper than SE Ranking, whose entry Core plan now sits at $129/month after a 2026 repricing.

🛠️ How to Replace Ahrefs for Free (or Nearly Free)

Here's the practical stack that replaces the daily 80% of Ahrefs for most use cases:

1. Google Search Console (free): rankings, impressions, CTR on your real data
2. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (free): your own site's backlinks, from Ahrefs's full index
3. ChatSEO free trial: AI layer, keyword research, audit recommendations
4. Moz Link Explorer (free: 10 queries/month): spot-check competitor backlinks
5. Google Keyword Planner (free with an Ads account): raw search volumes

When you outgrow this, ChatSEO Pro at €49/month adds Google Analytics, API & MCP access and up to 3 sites, at a fraction of the cost of Ahrefs Lite.

🎯 Which Free Ahrefs Alternative Should You Choose?

If you're a small agency → Serpstat

Serpstat at $69/month gives you the closest single-tool Ahrefs feature parity, with multi-client support, and it undercuts SE Ranking, whose Core plan now starts at $129/month after its 2026 repricing.

❓ FAQ – Free Ahrefs Alternatives

Is there a truly free alternative to Ahrefs?

Yes. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (AWT) is Ahrefs's own free product for verified site owners, with real backlink data and 5,000 crawl credits per month. Google Search Console is 100% free for rank tracking, and ChatSEO offers a free trial with AI chat and GSC connection. Combining AWT + GSC + ChatSEO's free trial covers the daily 80% of what paid Ahrefs users do.

What's the cheapest paid Ahrefs alternative?

Mangools and Ubersuggest are tied at $29/month for meaningful features (Mangools drops under $20/month on annual billing, Ubersuggest offers a one-time $290 lifetime deal). ChatSEO from €29/month is the best value if you want an AI layer: native GSC integration plus prioritized recommendations, not just raw data.

Can ChatSEO replace Ahrefs's backlink database?

For your own site's backlinks: yes, via the backlink index ChatSEO reads. For competitor backlinks at scale: no, Ahrefs's 35 trillion link index is unmatched. Most SMBs and freelancers don't need enterprise backlink analysis daily, which is why ChatSEO works as the AI layer for 80%+ of users.

Is Ahrefs Webmaster Tools really free?

Yes, 100% free, no credit card, no time limit. You verify your site (DNS or Google Search Console) and get real Ahrefs backlink data (up to 1,000 links shown), Site Audit scanning 170+ issues, and 5,000 crawl credits per month. The catch: it only works for sites you own.

Why not just use Ahrefs's free trial?

Ahrefs doesn't offer a traditional free trial, it offers AWT instead, which is free forever but limited to your own sites. There is now a $29 Starter plan, but it's heavily credit-limited (50 tracked keywords, 1 month of history). For an ongoing free workflow, AWT + Google Search Console + ChatSEO's free trial is the strongest combination.

🏆 Conclusion: The Smartest Free Ahrefs Alternative

If you remember one thing: you don't need $129/month Ahrefs to do great SEO. For 80 to 90% of real-world workflows, a stack of Ahrefs Webmaster Tools + Google Search Console + ChatSEO's free trial is all you need. The honest order matters: AWT gives you the real index data, GSC gives you the truth on rankings, and ChatSEO adds the AI layer that neither of them has.

Take action now:

1. Claim your Ahrefs Webmaster Tools account (free)
2. Connect it and ChatSEO's free trial to your Google Search Console
3. You now have the real backlink and ranking data of paid Ahrefs, plus an AI layer, for €0

Ahrefs will still win if you do enterprise-grade SEO. For everyone else, this stack is the smart play.
