What Are Open Graph Tags?
Open Graph is a meta-tag protocol Facebook introduced in 2010 to control how URLs render when shared on social networks. By adding og:* meta tags to your page head, you tell every major platform (Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Slack, iMessage, Discord) which title, description, and image to show in the preview card. Twitter has its own twitter:* tags but falls back to og:* when those are absent. Missing or broken OG tags mean platforms guess, and your share looks like a bare link.
What This Tool Checks
We fetch your page server-side, parse every meta tag, and validate it against current platform requirements:
- og:title: present, length 30–90 characters
- og:description: present, length 80–300 characters
- og:image: present, reachable, 1200×630px, under 8MB, JPEG/PNG/WebP
- og:url: present and canonical
- og:type: present (website / article / etc.)
- og:site_name and og:locale: recommended but optional
- twitter:card, twitter:title, twitter:description, twitter:image: overrides for X
- Duplicate or malformed tags that confuse parsers
Open Graph Best Practices
Use these recommended values to make your shares look polished on every platform.
| Tag | Recommended value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| og:title | 60–90 chars, clear, no clickbait | Truncated past ~90 chars on Facebook and ~70 on LinkedIn. |
| og:description | 155–300 chars | Under 155 looks thin; over 300 gets cut. Lead with the strongest hook. |
| og:image | 1200×630px, JPG/PNG/WebP, <8MB | Facebook requires 600×315 minimum; 1200×630 is the sharp 1.91:1 sweet spot. |
| og:type | website or article | Tells crawlers how to categorize the share. |
| og:url | Canonical URL | Consolidates likes and shares onto one canonical address. |
| twitter:card | summary_large_image | Largest card format on X. Falls back to og:image when present. |
